![]() ![]() ![]() I liked him best in the early to mid 90s leading the band Cul de Sac, especially on the Neu and Can influenced debut Ecim (may be worth it just for the cover below of Fahey's "Portland Cement Factory. Īlso mentioned in that review snippet is Glenn Jones, and he is an amazing player. There's a few mentions in the archive, probably all mine, but some pretty cool playing on there too. Gunn also is part of a collective called Black Dirt Oak after the Black Dirt studio in NY, and they put out a very cool, very adventurous record a little over a year ago called Wawayanda Patent. They are in JJ Cale mode for much of it, maybe hints of Traffic too. Beautiful record, mostly instrumental, but vocals when they fit, and lots of hot guitar playing. ![]() Lots of mentions by me and others if you do a search. Gunn has long ago added his name to that roll of honour, and here he and Gangloff are coming in hard from a decidedly Appalachian direction (with a Brooklyn twist from Gunn) and none the worse at all for that.Ĭlick to expand.Steve Gunn also made another great record in 2013 with Hiss Golden Messenger called Golden Gunn. ![]() Ever since John Fahey, Robbie Basho and Leo Kottke woke the world up – quite rudely, in the former case and perhaps slightly against its will – to the prospects which this most deceptively obvious of instruments is capable of opening in the right hands and with the right degree of non-traditional influence (mostly Indian ragas, and here in the hands of Gangloff and Gunn on the exploratory yet still melodic “First of Spring Trio,” of the atonal/avant/improv kind), there have been many followers and adapters worldwide, not least of them being the likes of Glenn Jones, James Blackshaw, Basho-Junghans and Michael Cashmore. Īctually, this is more than good – it’s the kind of great which the acoustic guitar of the American variety cries out for (even if it’s played by a German guitarist like Steffen Basho-Junghans). I love the reviews they do at the Freq website, so passionate and so colorful, often nonsensical too, but that's part of the fun. I think it's all improv, these guys are very special. I missed it then, but I've been getting pretty much anything that has Steve Gunn's name on it for the last couple years, and this is a great one. Been falling heavy for the Steve Gunn / Mike Gangloff Melodies For A Savage Fix from 2013. There's been some amazing Fahey disciples in the more modern times. I like all the early albums, maybe got a little too much of the newage sound going on later. Don't remember much about Bonnie, I was there for Leo, my friends were only there for Bonnie so knew nothing of him, and were pleasantly taken from the start, he was very friendly and chatty and humorous between songs, and his playing was of course amazing. Fond memories of Leo opening for Bonnie Raitt back in the mid 80s at a little mountain winery amphitheater around here on a beautiful starlit night, great fun. I was completely mesmerized, a young audiophile's delight, and followed him closely for many years after. The steady, churning acoustic guitar and mandolin, the steel guitar tracings, the bobbing and weaving organ, and a trusted cast of talented collaborators conspire to make “Quietly Blowing It” his most audacious and hopeful work yet.Ĭoncessions, including beer and wine will be available at the show. “I went looking for peace,” said Taylor, evidenced by his existential ruminations about parenthood, joy, hope, and loneliness.Taylor’s music is at once familiar, yet impossible to categorize. Throughout the album Taylor brings his keen eye to our “broken American moment” as he did on Hiss Golden Messenger’s critically acclaimed, GRAMMY® -nominated album “Terms of Surrender.” Taylor incorporates elements from the American songbook into his latest album “Quietly Blowing It” on Merge Records.
