Again, I was very pleasantly surprised with the overall quality of the Knebworth footage. Consider this for the period in which it was shot: most seventies footage of rock groups consists of grainy film stock, sound typically out of sync with the picture ( or worse, from a different performance altogether ), poor lighting, mediocre MONAURAL audio, etc. I would’ve liked more close ups on Artimus Pyle, as well as Billy Powell…again, there weren’t as many cameras to cover the angles we’re used to today. If the camera set-up was primarily for the Stones, then the director–who actually calls the shots on what camera fades to what–probably wasn’t at all familiar with Skynyrd’s material, evidenced by a tight shot of one guitarist playing rhythm while another was actually playing lead! It certainly wasn’t done as routinely as it is now. Location videotaping during the seventies was very expensive and cumbersome ( check out the size of those cameras during the wide shots ). I get the feeling that the only reason this footage was shot is that Skynyrd happened to be opening for the Rolling Stones, apparently the headlining act of this festival. The Knebworth performances were all complete, sans annoying interruptions of stars reminiscing about bygone days ( more than a couple of DVD releases of other groups are plagued with incomplete songs, cutting to an interview snippet or, worse, sound suddenly muted with yet another voiceover ). Review The first thing that struck me about this footage was how clear it was ( as well as the stereo sound ). In short, if you’re a Skynyrd fan, then this is THE DVD you have to own. As a follow-up, (according to the Skynyrd website) he died several years later of pneumonia. One interesting note you learn from the second movie is the tragic car accident which left Allen Collins paralized. It shows the reorganized band but, still covers the past too. The second movie on the DVD is also good. This movie brings the people themselves right into your house. The closing credits are one of the best parts with a high fidelity version of “Simple Man” playing in the background while home movie footage along with candid photos are intersperse with the credits.Īfter the tragic crash we had so little to remember except of course the music. You could always see that these people were not phony baloney rock stars but, real people that loved their craft and loved presenting it to the world. I could really imagine how he was probably thinking up more great lyrics for some song which would tell a story or maybe he was dreaming of bass fishing back in Florida. He was staring out the window, turned to place his bet and then turned back to the window. The ending is unbelievable as they show actual home movies of someone in the band holding a video camera and walking right onto the plane, into the cockpit and film it taking off and you can see the pilots briefly.įor me it was the 2 second clip showing Ronnie Van Zant playing poker on the plane that stuck in my mind the most. Some of the scenes showing the band on stage and the reaction of the fans to Freebird brings a tear to the eye. I wish the music quality was a little better but, it’s still very, very good. The movie also shows early raw footage and precious (although too short) interviews with Ronnie Van Zant. Of course the highlight of the film is the concert footage featuring a lot of the band’s greatest songs. And, to think that these young guys could be such powerful forces in the music world is amazing. Some of the footage showing their neighbourhoods on the West side of town brought back so many memories for me of a place I haven’t seen now for many years. I even have a photo in my early 70’s Ed White High School yearbook showing them playing at a school dance. I grew up very near to some of the guys in Jacksonville FL and have been a true Skynyrd fan for years. Review This movie is fantastic for true Skynyrd fans. A plus to the whistle is its versatility, as you can imitate not only teal but also drake mallards, pintails and widgeon with the tool. Several teal-specific whistle-type calls are available. The rhythm when calling green-wings can be seen phonetically as peep! Peep-peep! Peep. That is, they make a high-pitched whistled PEEP! - short of duration and high in volume. Green-wing teal, on the other hand, are what I’ll call peepers. However, they do require more air pressure and a radical departure from the traditional mallard cadence. Teal-specific calls, however, are tuned higher out-of-the-box. More air and tongue pressure increases the pitch, and all that leaves is to step up the cadence or rhythm. Many folks, myself included, use a traditional mallard call on blue-wings. The differences are in the pitch, which is much higher, and the cadence, which is much quicker. The basic call for blue-wings is very similar to the hen mallard’s greeting call. There’s a difference between teal in terms of calls and calling. Better yet, wait until the birds have landed, entice them closer with the promise of company using the whine, then practice the art of jump-shooting. Then, when they’re within 100 yards or so, the whine, the aforementioned peep-whistle of peet - w-o-o-O-O-I-T, or simply the rising whistle portion of the call can convince them to light. Sometimes the high-pitched creeeeek - creeeeek in-flight call of the wood duck will get a flock’s attention. Coincidence? Perhaps, but that one-in-a-million occasion was enough to convince me that when a flying wood duck wants to listen, he will. However, I did on one occasion see a small flock change course and return to a timbered pothole where a cousin of mine, wood duck call in hand, had just called to them in their peet - w-o-o-O-O-I-T rising whistle. It’s been my experience that 99% of the woody population will ignore a wood duck call. I’d have to branch out and come to grips with the fact that some ducks don’t quack. From that point on, I decided if I wanted to attract more ducks to my decoy spread, I’d have to learn to speak their language. Rolling trills and odd guttural groans audibles seemingly out of place in the duck marsh, but there they were. When I moved to Washington state in ’93, I learned there was more to life than just quacks and quacking. When my waterfowling career began in 1974, I knew only mallard duck calls and the traditional quack in its three or four variations. These contests may also have participants show the differences between different types of calls, such as alarm calls or courtship noises.Beyond the quack: Learn the different duck sounds of common speciesīy M.D. Attending a duck calling contest where participants may be demonstrating the calls of different duck species.Avoid facilities that specialize in domestic duck breeds, however, as their sounds are different from those wild birds make. Visiting a local aviary, botanical garden, farm, zoo, or another facility that is home to different duck species and listening to their calls and other sounds.Practicing with those sounds can be especially useful when migrating ducks may not be nearby all year for in-the-field listening. Studying duck calls online or through various bird sound recordings, including hunting calls intended for specific duck species. This will help birders learn to better identify those common species and note when other sounds are audible that would indicate unusual visitors. Listening carefully to positively identified ducks, such as the familiar ducks at a local pond. We note the vendors’ specified battery life in each review. Check closely for the type and number of batteries you need, and whether a starter set is included. We haven’t included ergonomic models in this round of reviews.īattery needs: All wireless keyboards use batteries. Look for models with adjustable legs or feet. Most mainstream keyboards use membrane technology, which is adequate for most users, but heavy-duty users and gamers will likely prefer keyboards with mechanical switches (which are not reviewed here). Windows hotkeys, or even programmable keys, are great bonuses, especially for power users.Īdjustability: Some keyboards offer no adjustment for angle or height. flatter key designs, and it’s surprising how little things like the texture or the amount of dimple will make or break a choice. This is why we encourage trying before buying: We’ve had very different experiences with traditional keys vs. Keys: Look for keys that are sculpted and spaced for typing comfort. These will sacrifice some features but be easier to take with you. As more of us carry laptops or tablets, however, we’ll look for models that are compact or portable. Size: A model that will always sit on your desktop can be bigger and heavier, and usually some other advantages some with that. You’re going to use this keyboard every day, so make sure it fits your typing habits and your needs. For instance, we balance the versatility of multi-platform models like Logitech’s K780 against its performance as an actual keyboard you need to use everyday (and in this case, it wins on all counts). We considered the size, weight, and durability of each model against its purpose-whether it was designed to be portable or desk-bound, and compact or fully featured. We also tried the secondary features: hotkeys, switches and dials on multi-platform models, and even the ability to adjust the angle or other comfort characteristics. We assessed the primary typing experience: key design, typing feel, and even noisiness. Measuring at 3.19 x 0.87 x 14.35 inches, this hand rest cushion is surprisingly great in its comfort and support. Built for gamers by gaming professionals, the Redragon P023 is the best wrist rest pad for gaming keyboards, especially those having 104 keys. We spent at least one full workday typing exclusively on each model we tested, with follow-up time to allow for a learning curve. Surface not as smooth as 3M Gel wrist rest’s. It was hands-on all the way with our keyboard testing. Logitech Ergo K860 review How we test wireless keyboards It’s a little expensive compared to a conventional wireless keyboard, but if you’re struggling with comfort, the K860 is the only ergonomic keyboard we’d heartily recommend. In the course of our review, there was a marked improvement in typing comfort and reduced muscle tension, all without sacrificing productivity to a steep learning curve. Ergonomic keyboards take time and patience to get used to, so throwing in blank keycaps, as the Koolertron does, is just another complication.Logitech’s Ergo K860 has finally conquered our skepticism about awkward ergonomic keyboards. For everybody else, printed keycaps and a standard layout are more important.
If an average Joe in the car’s past performed careful, high-quality work, and portions of the paint have rubbed through or some trim has lost its gloss, the time and cost associated with a full restoration would be significant. (This wok was also among the lightest of those we tested, and that made tossing and pouring ingredients out much easier. A car’s finish doesn’t need a famous name attached to earn the title of patina. That design made gripping the handle and lifting the wok much easier. I am going for a different look than most. Only our top pick, The Wok Shop’s wok, had an ergonomic, comfortable-to-hold fully wooden handle bolted to a thick, curved piece of metal, which was welded to the wok’s bowl. Everyone has been asking me how I rusted my BMW so I threw together a little video. When I didn’t cover that metal portion of the handle with a thick towel first, I’d sometimes forget it was there and burn my hand. For this step we're using the Scotch-Brite side of the sponge. Some of the woks we tested were so heavy that we really needed to move our hands closer to the wok’s bowl for leverage when lifting. IMO 'patina' cars look like crap unless it's some kind of totally-original paint on a well-used car (not a rusty barn find that's clearcoated, or even worse the 'man made patina' Then again, I also don't get the people who spend 20k making their paint so perfect they're afraid to even drive the car. After an initial rinse, Bar Keepers Friend is applied and worked into the wet, surface-rusted finish. And that bit of steel gets very hot while you’re cooking. Airbrushing and using faded lettering helps make the case for age. It uses modern techniques to artificially age a vehicle. Most of the woks we tested had a thick, chubby wooden stick handle, with an inch or two of carbon steel wrapped around it where it was attached to the bowl. Fauxtina is an artificial form of patina. This is for those that have years of oxidation, rust and overspray to get down to what’s there. The more we tested, the more pronounced the pros and cons of small tweaks in the stick handle designs became. CLR can be applied with any towel or pad. This combination seemed to offer the greatest comfort and convenience for the modern home cook. Good luck as this will probably be your only reply as most guys may think your alittle nutty. Also-Try using a power sander on the finish with some sand mixed in with oil. But we decided to test woks with both a stick handle (for tossing and maneuvering) and a helper handle (for lifting and pouring). Jay: Try paint thinner with some heavy sand paper wearing gloves of course. There are different traditional wok styles, such as a pow wok with just a stick handle or a Canton-style wok with two small side handles. We didn’t want it to feel cute.īecause Broadly was going to be producing video and photography in addition to written content, Rhodes was also in charge of establishing a styleguide in order to maintain a cohesive look across platforms. He and Vice’s executive global design director pulled typography from magazines and started to establish a color, and he worked with Broadly’s creative director and art director to build the initial look and imagery. For him, it helped that his team “started really early in the game establishing what the look of the vertical would be.” This involved working closely with other individuals in these beginning stages. Similarly, the biggest challenge for Rhodes was crafting an overall look that would be cohesive and consistent in both print and digital, as well as across a variety of other mediums like ads and billboards. For her, coming up with a name and logo also meant thinking about how it would translate to a Twitter avatar. Schriefer’s team worked with the marketing and social departments from the start to make sure everything could translate from platform to platform. “It went through a lot of hands,” said Rhodes. It then went back to New York where a creative director and art director worked on deeper style guidelines and Schriefer’s web development team handled and built the specific site design details. During a brand review of other women’s media sites, Rhodes noted that most sites focused on fashion or celebrity, whereas they believed that “women were actually very interested in real news and real conversation.” Schriefer emphasized, “we did not want it to be Vice for girls.”īroadly was conceptualized in New York while the primary development of Broadly’s look was done in Los Angeles with Rhodes’ team. “We were pretty adamant we didn’t want it to be the Vice look but just pink,” Schriefer explained. Around the same time these mission-based and content-based elements were established, Schriefer and a digital designer came onboard to work on the general look and feel of the site, as well as the general UX. Broadly was “conceived to fill that void, not just the void at Vice but also the void in women’s media in particular,” Schriefer said.Īfter coming up with the concept and editorial mission statement, Shanon Kelley, Broadly’s publisher, approached Rhodes to start building the initial pitch deck. Although Vice’s audience typically consists of what Schriefer called a coveted demographic for advertisers - 24-year old men - this also meant there was still half of the population that they were not, but could be, reaching. Tracie Egan Morrissey, Broadly’s Editor-in-Chief, came to Vice with the proposal for a women’s focused channel last year. I was curious about how Vice designed and launched Broadly, a site that is simultaneously so different from any of their other verticals in look, feel and audience, yet retains Vice’s edgy aesthetic.Īccording to Amy Schriefer, Broadly’s Senior Digital Producer, and Dersu Rhodes, Design Director for the Los Angeles headquarters, the major guiding elements were a strong editorial mission, a clearly defined aesthetic and the collaborative, multiplatform ecosystem that is Vice Media.īroadly's homepage forgoes Vice's typically heavy fonts and busy pages for a cleaner look, including a color that the team refers to as Broadly Blue.īroadly started with a definition of its mission and sensibility. Unlike the heavy black color scheme and font weights of Vice Media’s other sites, Broadly was bold in its use of color, typography and grids. When Broadly, Vice’s female-centric vertical debuted on August 3, 2015, I was struck not just by the kinds of content they were putting out, but also by its clean yet personable design that complemented its unique voice. and I hope that they make a third installment. I laughed a lot more during this movie then the last movie. Pitch Perfect 2 was a lot more focused on the humor, as opposed to focused on the teamwork and success of the Bellas. It makes her feel special, which is funny in itself. Tavares will always hold a special place for me, as the brothers were my first interviews when I was 18 years old. What followed over the next decade was a tremendous string of hits, including a #1 hit cover of Hall & Oates’ “She’s Gone,” and even bigger dance classics such as “It Only Takes a Minute” and “Heaven Must Be Missing An Angel.” The brothers’ final major hit, the 1982 Kenny Nolan ballad “Penny For Your Thoughts,” also won them a Grammy nomination (they previously won a Grammy for their “More Than a Woman” contribution to the soundtrack of Saturday Night Fever). And the associated Check It Out LP gave the first glimpse of tight brotherly harmonies and alternating lead vocals that would become the Tavares trademark sound. It soared to the top 10 on the R&B charts and became the group's first top 40 pop hit. They finally scored a contract with Capitol Records' then-new black music division and released their first single, "Check It Out," in 1973.
